Controversial Rules about Hats

As many of us know, the district policy for hats restrict students from wearing hats that are not school related. People may try to find a reason why this rule should be enforced, but as most people, I believe that it is pointless. As a girl, I do not wear ball caps to school, and even I think that it is unfair to make people take off their hats. The hats that might have a personal touch do not harm anyone, and I do not see why the policy treats them as a harmful thing to students. Not only do people wear them as an accessory, but they wear them to shield their face from the sun. They also want to express their personality through their clothing, and a mere hat does not harm anyone. Taking away this freedom of speech goes against the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights; and to my knowledge, people are allowed free speech to the extent that does not harm or threaten others. We all know not to wear offensive hats, and most hats that are taken away are sport-related hats. So why take away a right that people are allowed to have? Why take a hat that is neither offensive nor threatening? I understand that other pieces of clothing may be offensive, but hats do not do any harm.
To modify this, the school should allow any hat that does not offend, threaten, or harm anyone. Many students would be grateful to have this priviledge, and they would be less likely to want to break the hat rule on campus. As long as the hat is appropriate, the student should be allowed to wear it with no hassle.
